The Blue Note Bar

Good fun at the gig last night although I was completely drained and spaced out going straight there from yoga.

Set:

Volcano ~ Damo
Sail Away ~ David Gray
Mellowdrama ~ Justin Thorne
Sold ~ Justin Thorne
Diamonds on the inside ~ Ben Harper
Cold River ~ Justin Thorne
My Run ~ Justin Thorne
Wires ~ Athlete

The Big Hellos were excellent and they played my favorite of their original tunes 'Evolved'.

Paul was excellent too and 'Euphoria' is a classic.

There is plenty of original music in this island.

Good weekend for music...

Saturday night was GREAT fun, I sang with MUSIC ROOM at a private party. Despite the cold (and I mean FUCKIN cold) we played a solid set. They had a huge BBQ pit going, which became more popular as a heater than a charrer of meat!

Set as follows:

Word up ~ Gun/Cameo
Smooth ~ Santana
Million miles away ~ Rory Gallagher
Pebbles on a beach ~ Paul Weller
Don't wanna miss a thing ~ Aerosmith
Tempted ~ Squeeze
She sells sanctuary ~ The Cult
Pinball Wizard ~ The Who
Fire and water ~ Free
Boys of summer ~ Don Henley
Hush ~ Kula Shaker
Riders on the storm ~ The Doors
Californication ~ Red Hot Chilli Peppers

And then Jason and I took it in turns to play acoustic tunes, J crooning out classics by James Taylor, Elvis Costello, Britney Spears and Greenday (eclectic to say the least!) and I spun some originals, Ben Harper, Damien Rice and David Gray.

The guys played brilliantly, it is the best set we have played live (only the third) and it is so much fun playing with a full band and with such accomplished and talented musicians. To have the backing of guitar, keyboard, bass and excellent drumming is just so much fun.

Saturday afternoon I penned a new tune, which I am calling 'Mellowdrama' and I want to call my next CD by the same title.

Lyrics:

Softly, take it easy
slowly, on your own
she says, we don't crave what hurts
and talks of, our hope breaking
but I don't have a face to touch
or your body to shape my song

'cause I've got nothing
for me to go on
just some words
that I created
in my mind
and some eyes
that I can't see
that I can't find

softly, take it easy
slowly, on your own
I think of, you on that bus
and wish I was the one your were watching
but I don't have a face to touch
or your body to shape my song

'cause I've got nothing
for me to go on
just some words
that I created
in my mind
and some eyes
that I can't see
that I can't find

Nice melody, and I debuted the new tune at the Moody Blues last night... it was my first song.

It was great to meet blues/folk player Paul Bisson, fresh from his Australian trip, complete with new tunes. Paul is a great player with a solid voice and I enjoyed his session a lot, great to see finger picking blues played so well by a local musician.

Fergus played solidly as ever with some John Martyn, Derrin Naundorf tunes and other than Derrin himself, probably the best version of 'all along the watchtower' you will hear today.

I have some gigs lined up

I will post reminders as the dates approach.

Derrin Nauendorf

Went to chambers last night to catch the virtuoso blues man in action again. Still amazing, but the sound wasn't quite up to scratch. At the Moody Blues the bass notes almost burst your spleen.

Amazing, amazing talent and he has a very loyal following here, many of the same faces from last month were there to support him. Good luck mate.

So, New York is all booked up, I head out on the 3rd of May. Hopefully that will work for the producer and we can lay down some new tracks. I've been playing the tunes a lot and have come up with a couple of new ones that have potential.

And in September, I am heading to Lohifushi in the Maldives for ten days of surfing waves like this:

Spending three nights in Dubai in a five star hotel on the way out, gonna trek into the desert and have a barby with some camels!

The new Jack Johnson album is BRILLIANT!!!

From the first tune you are taken on a mellow, funky, bluesy journey. The new Johnson is more polished and the album is produced much better that his previous outings. I can't get it out of my CD player, it's the BEST album to wake up to!

Playing at The Splash tonight, singing with ROCK band, The Music Room. We play an eclectic mix of classics from Aerosmith, Paul Weller, Santana, Don Henley and Kula Shaker to name a few.

Sunday night I'll be dropping in on the Moody Blues Open Mic and on Monday I will be returning there to watch Derrin Nauendorf's incredible guitar playing.
